Sunshine and shamrocks and smiles

*Update: Winner picked!  Deb Pederson won the photo session, and I also picked three runner-ups to receive free 8×10 prints.  Thanks everyone for all the great comments these last couple days.  May rainbows fill your heart:)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you!  I’ve just had a wild hair.  A wild, March hare…  In honor of my favorite holiday, I’ll be giving away a free photo session to one lucky reader.  (Photos and products are still be purchased separately, portrait session must be scheduled by July 30.) Just comment at the end of this post or on my photography Facebook page by midnight on Friday, March 18th, and you’ll be entered to win.  For an extra entry, share this post via Facebook or on your blog, and send me an email at althea@altheaphotos.com.

You never know what lucky things will happen to a person on St. Patrick’s Day!

To celebrate this most delightful day, do your best to spread some smiles and good cheer.  I’m already feeling more cheerful having announced this photo session give-away!  My five year old son said the other day, “St. Patrick’s Day is my favorite holiday too!” <pause> “What do we do on St. Patrick’s Day, Mom?”  Some ideas I had to share with him and that I’ll share with you include:

  • cut out some shamrocks and pass them around like Valentines
  • take a funny family St. Patrick’s Day picture
  • buy someone some springtime flowers just because
  • make a special breakfast with some colorful surprises
  • at meal time, go around the table and share a wish you have.  Make another wish and keep it secret!
  • Give some extra hugs, and find little ways to be a little extra silly

Andrew decided to make confetti out of green paper so he could throw it up in the air and shout, “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!”  I approve:)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!

WHAT ST PATRICK’S DAY/ BEING IRISH MEANS TO ME (& why it stinks I’m not going out this yr)

1- It’s a 1/4 of my heritage
2- I purposefully gave my son an Irish name (Darren Patrick)
3- 1 of my eyes is green
4- it’s my dad’s birthday
5- I hang decorations at home and work year round
6- My paternal grandma celebrated about yr round via her decorating and extensive green wardrobe
7- A favorite treat is the Ruben salad at McGinn’s in Milwaukee

Great ideas! We had a visit from Leprechaun Pete, who led the kids on a scavenger hunt with clues, which led to a pot of gold, filled with Lucky Charms for breakfast… a big treat in this family. We topped it with green milk. K & I also had a green (& gold) themed lunch, and we’ll be doing the same with dinner: green quesadillas w/ spinach & of course guacamole to top it off, lime cilantro rice, pistachio pudding, green grapes, green applesauce, etc. We also did a quick wiki research about St. Patrick’s Day and found out the original color associated with St. Pat was blue! So much fun! I can see why it’s your favorite!

Kiss me! I’m 3/4 Irish. My oldest son was given the Irish name of Devin. We are celebrating with some Irish potatoes for dinner tonight. Happy St. Patrick’s Day Althea!

St. Patrick’s Day has a special meaning to me because of my grandmother. She was Irish and a true Irish Catholic! She passed away last year so this is my first St. Patrick’s Day without her. We always ate corned beef and cabbage together, i miss not having it this year.

I dressed our kiddos in lots of green and made sure to think of Grandma. Next year that pesky leprechaun will make a visit but this year i just wasn’t ready for those festivities.

The kiddos may not be very Irish (my hubby is Italian) but everyone is a little bit irish on St. Patty’s Day!

Oooh – I don’t live in Madison but visit frequently. I’ve always thought it would be nice to do a family session at the Farmer’s Market or the Union Terrace.

Thanks for the great comments, guys!

Nikki, I love your exuberant enjoyment of St. Patty’s Day:) Hope to get to photograph you and Darren sometime soon!

Deb, you guys really did some fun activities for those kiddos of yours. I love your dinner menu! I think I’ll have to plan a scavenger hunt for Andrew and Sylvia next March 17.

Melissa – Hope your Irish potatoes were yummy. We had split pea soup. I’d love to do a session with you and your boys:)

Carrie – I’m glad you have good St. Patrick’s Day memories with your grandma, and I’m sorry that she wasn’t here to celebrate with you. First anniversaries are often particularly hard. I hope you’ll be making her recipes for your family soon. Thanks for commenting!

Great shots. They show the character of the subjects.
